Motion Picture and Television Reading Room

Relevant subject headings include "Blacks in the Motion Picture Industry," "Motion pictures--Africa," and "South Africa--In motion pictures." The Library of Congress site also has a section called "African American Odyssey," an illustrated guide to many of their holdings in African American history and culture (including film); and a listing of Black subjects in their Paper Print collection of early cinema.

New York Public Library
Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Moving Image and Recorded Sound Division


Extensive and rare collections for the study of African American history and culture. "The MIRS Division collections encompass a variety of formats including motion picture film (released prints and outtakes), video recordings, and music and spoken arts recordings in several formats." The Photographs and Prints Division has an Images of African Americans in the 19th Century section. The Oral History/Video Documentation Program includes a number of oral video testimonies of African Americans. Other collection strengths include early jazz and tap footage on film.
